Autumn is one of the most atmospheric seasons to discover Lapland. Between September and November, as dark nights return, the Arctic sky offers new opportunities to witness the Northern Lights while nature gradually prepares for winter.
Accommodation is in a lodge surrounded by nature and away from light pollution, offering the chance to observe the night sky without lengthy excursions.
During the day, the programme combines experiences connected to Arctic life: meeting huskies, visiting a reindeer farm, exploring the region between Finland and Sweden, and discovering places such as the Arctic Circle, Aavasaksa and the coastal city of Kemi, home to the SnowCastle overlooking the Baltic Sea.
There is also time to enjoy Nordic traditions and relaxation, including a traditional Finnish sauna and free time surrounded by nature.
The journey follows a relaxed pace and is suitable for travellers looking for an authentic introduction to the Arctic, without demanding activities or an intensive schedule. Autumn brings generally milder temperatures than winter, vibrant colours and a quieter atmosphere away from the winter tourist crowds.
Arrival at Kemi-Tornio Airport (KEM) and transfer to the lodge, nestled in the Martimoaapa Nature Reserve, far from light pollution. Accommodation in rustic double, twin or family rooms with shared facilities.
After dinner, enjoy your first opportunity to observe the Northern Lights in the natural surroundings of the lodge.
The day is dedicated to discovering Arctic life with a visit to a husky farm, where we learn about the dogs’ daily routines and their role in the region. There will be time to interact with them and enjoy a short forest walk accompanied by some of the huskies.
In the afternoon, relax with a traditional Finnish sauna. After dinner, another opportunity to observe the Northern Lights in the natural surroundings of the lodge.
We travel to Kemi, a town on the shores of the Baltic Sea, to visit a local reindeer farm and learn about the animals’ role in Sámi and Lapland traditions.
After some free time for lunch, we visit the SnowCastle and enjoy a short walk around the harbour. Return to the lodge in the evening and, after dinner, another opportunity to observe the Northern Lights.
We travel north through the landscapes of Lapland, reaching the Arctic Circle. Along the way, we stop at Aavasaksa, a scenic viewpoint on the Finnish-Swedish border, overlooking the forests and the Tornio River.
We also visit a local workshop where traditional wooden kuksa cups and puukko knives are handcrafted. The journey continues to the Swedish side of the river, exploring the border area between Tornio and Haparanda, two neighbouring towns belonging to different countries.
After dinner in Tornio, we return to the lodge, with another opportunity to observe the Northern Lights.
After breakfast, transfer to Kemi-Tornio Airport (KEM) for the flight home.
All outdoor activities are subject to potential changes based on weather and environmental conditions. In the event of adverse or extreme conditions, we reserve the right to reduce their duration, modify them, or cancel them if necessary to ensure the safety of the group.
The Northern Lights are an unpredictable natural phenomenon. Because their visibility depends on shifting weather conditions and solar activity, sightings can never be fully guaranteed.
During this trip, you will experience different weather conditions, from cool late-summer days to temperatures well below freezing in November. Dressing in layers is essential to adapt easily to changing temperatures.
