The journey

We celebrate New Year's Eve in Lapland on an 8-day journey across two Nordic countries, Sweden and Finland. The itinerary is designed for those who want to experience the Arctic winter up close, rather than simply admire it from afar. We begin in Stockholm, enjoying the Scandinavian festive atmosphere before heading north to Luleå, our gateway to Swedish Lapland, where snow-covered landscapes and the tranquillity of the far north await.
Here, we experience two of the season's highlights: a husky sled ride through the Arctic wilderness and an evening snowmobile safari in search of the Northern Lights. A free day in Luleå gives us time to explore the city at our own pace, with the possibility of walking across the frozen Baltic Sea — a rare and unforgettable experience. We also welcome the New Year here, in the heart of Swedish Lapland, surrounded by nature and far from the crowds.
Our journey then continues into Finland, stopping in Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland and home to the famous Santa Claus Village, an enjoyable visit for all ages. The final days take us through Oulu and Helsinki, before our return home.
The group is limited to a maximum of 6 participants and accompanied throughout by a English-speaking guide. The package includes accommodation with breakfast, domestic flights between Stockholm, Luleå, Oulu and Helsinki, private transfers, the dinners specified in the itinerary and all the equipment needed for the snowmobile safari.
A New Year's Eve experience created by Snap the North for those who want to welcome the year in an authentic Arctic setting, surrounded by Northern Lights and Nordic traditions. No false promises: sightings of the Northern Lights always depend on natural conditions.

Day by day itinerary

Evening arrival at Stockholm Airport and transfer to the hotel. After check-in, we begin our Scandinavian adventure with a welcome dinner — the perfect opportunity to get to know one another and soak up the special atmosphere of our New Year's journey.

Today we discover Sweden's capital, exploring its historic streets and central districts on foot. During the festive season, Stockholm comes alive with sparkling lights and seasonal decorations. We'll have time to enjoy its charming old streets, decorated squares and unique Nordic atmosphere. The day ends with dinner together, before setting off for Lapland.

After breakfast at the hotel, we head to Stockholm Airport for our flight to northern Sweden. We are expected to arrive in Luleå in the early afternoon, followed by a transfer to the hotel. Once in Lapland, we begin to experience the unique atmosphere of the Arctic, surrounded by snow-covered landscapes and the tranquillity of the far north. In the evening, we enjoy dinner together and our first moments in this remarkable part of Sweden.

The day begins with one of Lapland's most authentic experiences: meeting the huskies and enjoying a sled ride through the spectacular winter landscapes of the Arctic. After a short transfer to the activity location, we'll set off on an unforgettable adventure with these energetic dogs, discovering the Nordic wilderness in a traditional way.
The evening is dedicated to one of the most anticipated moments of the trip: the search for the Northern Lights. We'll head out on a snowmobile safari across Lapland's frozen landscapes, keeping our eyes on the northern sky in the hope of witnessing the spectacular dance of the green lights.

Today is free to explore Luleå and experience the unique atmosphere of the Arctic winter. At this time of year, the city offers some special experiences, including one of its most spectacular: walking on the frozen Baltic Sea. When ice conditions allow, designated walking trails are set up, giving locals and visitors the chance to enjoy an extraordinary winter landscape.
We'll have time to discover the city at our own pace and enjoy a winter's day in northern Sweden. In the evening, we'll come together to celebrate New Year's Eve in the heart of Swedish Lapland.

We set off for Finland, crossing the spectacular landscapes of Lapland. Along the way, we'll admire the Arctic wilderness, snow-covered forests and the peaceful beauty of the northern region.
Our destination is Rovaniemi, the capital of Finnish Lapland and home to the famous Santa Claus Village. We'll have time to explore its themed areas, meet the reindeer and enjoy the magical atmosphere of this winter wonderland.
After our visit, we'll continue towards Oulu. Depending on the weather and solar activity, we may make stops along the way in the hope of witnessing one of the North's most spectacular natural phenomena: the Northern Lights.

We'll spend the first part of the day enjoying a little more of the Nordic atmosphere before leaving for Helsinki. There will be time for a short walk through Oulu, exploring the city centre and its festive winter atmosphere, with seasonal lights and decorations still brightening the streets.
Later, we'll head to the airport for our flight to Helsinki, where we'll spend the final night of our journey.

After our final night in Helsinki, we'll head to the airport early in the morning for our return flight home. This brings an unforgettable journey through Scandinavia's Arctic landscapes to an end, filled with Nordic cities, local traditions and authentic experiences in the heart of winter.

Everything you need to know

All outdoor activities are subject to potential changes based on weather and environmental conditions. In the event of adverse or extreme conditions, we reserve the right to reduce their duration, modify them, or cancel them if necessary to ensure the safety of the group.

The travel program is intended as a descriptive guideline and is subject to change. We reserve the right to make minor adjustments to the itinerary for logistical, operational, or weather-related reasons, or due to any other factors that could affect the smooth running and success of the trip.

Facing the Arctic winter requires proper clothing to fully enjoy every experience without feeling the cold. Lapland in December and the following months can bring very harsh temperatures, often dropping below -20°C, so dressing in layers is essential.

Layering System (valid for all activities):

  1. Base Layer (breathable thermal underwear):

    • Top and bottom in merino wool or technical fabric (avoid cotton).
  2. Mid Layer (insulating):

    • Sweatshirt, fleece, or wool sweater.
  3. Outer Layer (protective):

    • Waterproof and windproof jacket and trousers.
    • In the coldest months (October–November), an insulated winter jacket is recommended.

Essential Accessories:

  • Warm hat (preferably covering the ears).
  • Gloves (one light pair and a warmer, waterproof pair or mittens).
  • Neck warmer.
  • Wool socks (preferably double layers during colder months).
  • Waterproof trekking boots or winter boots with non-slip soles.

For Northern Lights Viewing:

  • Dress as warmly as possible: waiting outdoors involves standing still for long periods.
  • Hand or foot warmers (if available).

Even with a smartphone, you can capture great photos of the Northern Lights, especially with recent models. Here is our recommended setup, from the essentials to the ultimate photography gear:

The Essentials (for everyone):

  • Smartphone or Camera Tripod: Absolutely essential to keep your shot stable and avoid motion blur during night photography.
  • Touchscreen Gloves: Crucial for adjusting your camera or operating your smartphone without exposing your hands to the freezing cold.
  • Extra Batteries / Power Bank: Extreme cold drains battery life significantly faster than usual.

For Smartphone Photographers:

  • A dedicated long-exposure app or your phone’s built-in "Night" / "Pro" mode.

Recommended Settings:

  • High ISO, long exposure time (15–30 seconds), manual focus set to infinity, and flash strictly turned off.

For Camera Photographers (DSLR / Mirrorless):

  • DSLR or Mirrorless Camera with full manual controls.
  • Fast Lens: A wide aperture of f/2.8 or lower is recommended.
  • Wide-Angle Lens: Ideally 14–24mm for full-frame sensors or 10–18mm for APS-C sensors.
  • Remote Shutter Release or Self-Timer: Prevents micro-vibrations when triggering the shot.
  • Headlamp (preferably with a red light mode): Helps you navigate and adjust settings in the dark without disrupting others or ruining night vision.
  • Daypack / Hiking Backpack: Always bring a daypack with enough room for extra layers, water, snacks, and your camera.

  • Sunglasses: Essential for sunny September days when the glare can be strong.

  • Swimwear: Be sure to pack a swimsuit if a sauna session is on your itinerary.

The Northern Lights are an unpredictable natural phenomenon. Because their visibility depends on shifting weather conditions and solar activity, sightings can never be fully guaranteed.
